Balance general del FSM virtual con algunas propuestas concretas / General assessment of online Forum with some concrete proposals

(English below)

    1. A nivel organizativo:

A general evaluation of the virtual WSF, with some concrete proposals

1. First of all, the most important thing is to thank and congratulate all the volunteers who have worked hard for this forum! Without them, the result would have been very different! Thanks!

2. The virtual WSF was an unexpected success. Unexpected because preparations began late and unexpected due to organizational weakness. But, we succeeded!

3. We succeeded, yes! But how?

a. I don’t think the 10,000 participants is a real success. For a virtual forum, the number of participants could be much higher. Furthermore, more than half came from Brazil, and more than 70% from Latin America. In other words, once again, it was not a truly ‘global’ forum.

b. My impression – to be verified – is also that many activities have not touched on the major themes of this time: peace and war, economy, democracy, ecology, feminism, social justice. Of course, thanks to the movements of our own IC, these themes were well represented, but by the visitors, much less. Many activities did not even have an international dimension. If I look at who signed up for the social justice day, I see that it is a small minority that really works on social justice.

c. We mentioned the pandemic in our title, but I wonder how many activities talked about it?

d. There were very serious problems with the website, the registrations, and the agenda. Some of these problems were technical, but some could have been political. There was no space for activities not directly related to thematic spaces, so it was impossible to see what social justice, or ecology, or communication really was. In addition, making the ‘future of the forum’ a cross-cutting theme was quite misleading, you had to read a long list of activities to find the three activities really touching the future of the forum.

e. Finally, listening, as always, to the manifestations of self-satisfaction, I wonder to what extent many participants do not confuse virtual reality with real reality. We did NOT have a march, the Asians did not speak with the Africans and the Americans, we did NOT touch, we do not know each other, everything was virtual. This confusion is quite risky, because you cannot change the world from behind a screen… Of course, this forum was better than nothing, but to have a minimum of influence we have to know each other, communicate directly, really exchange…

f. My main criticism touches on the point that we already discussed several times: what a pity that we could not leave a single direct and forceful message: for a vaccine as a common good, for Palestine, for disarmament … We have some interesting statements, but who knows them ? Where was the press to hear the message of the WSF?

g. My fundamental criticism is that we lack a specific objective and that is why we cannot develop any specific strategy.

4. Concrete proposals for the future

Many of the problems mentioned above can be easily solved if we want to organize, next year, a face-to-face or hybrid forum in Mexico. It will be a job for the Mexican and international facilitation commissions. We have work to do at the organizational level and at the content level.

a. At the content level: I already proposed, a year ago, to use this period between the two forums to develop a real process, trying to make the convergences concrete. As there is a real dynamic at the moment, it seems to me that the movements that want it could, in a self-managed way, use this year for two things:

i. Ask yourself to what extent your thematic positions touch other issues – for example, to what extent the need for social justice requires economic or environmental justice.

ii. By making a ‘catalog’ of these points, in a second phase, they could contact the movements of these other thematic spaces, to make a common program with the points on which there is convergence.

iii. In this way, the Mexico forum could be a forum of concrete convergences with some very strong messages.

b. At the organizational level:

i. Of course, we need a facilitating commission for the face-to-face forum in Mexico. But given that the beginning of such a pre-pandemic commission had great coordination problems – with exclusions – it seems fundamental to me that we give the Mexicans the time to organize in complete peace of mind. In other words, what I propose is that the facilitating commission works in a first period of several months as a national commission, so that it can be consolidated. It can be internationalized in a second period, with objective criteria.

ii. The only thing the IC has to do to help the Mexicans in this first period is to find resources. I therefore propose that the IC decides on such a commission at its meeting on February 20.

iii. For the rest, the IC could use this first period, of about 6 months, let’s say, to re-organize itself. It’s an old discussion, but we all know that IC right now does not mean much. We need to first take stock of what we have – who has reconfirmed their participation in the IC? – second, ask ourselves what kind of IC we need to do what? In other words, we have to do what the different renewal groups already propose: discuss our future in order to better prepare for this future. It would be ideal if we could reach some conclusion in the face-to-face forum in Mexico.

c. Summary of proposals:

i. Self-managed convergence activities – end of current GF

ii. Purely Mexican facilitation commission in a first period

iii. Resource group from IC

iv. Discussion about the future of the IC and the forum in the IC.

Please, friends, let us make good use of the months ahead of us, avoid the flight ahead, improve our organization, reflect on our objectives and strategies.
